Demonstrators gathered across the country Saturday, rallying in more than 1,200 “Hands Off!” events aimed at raising concerns over recent federal policies.

In Middletown, a local group joined voices with others nationwide, calling for transparency and accountability in government.

Wendy Rayak, a Middletown resident, joined the protest, saying she is concerned over the impact of federal policy changes, “They're putting social security at risk, veterans benefits at risk, disabled people at risk. so many good people are going to be hurt”.

Organized by over 150 groups, including labor unions, civil rights organizations, and advocacy groups, protesters pointed to proposed staffing cuts in federal agencies, changes to Social Security offices, immigration enforcement, and adjustments to healthcare and LGBTQ+ protections.

Connecticut State Senator Matt Lesser addressed the crowd in Middletown, where emotions ran high over recent federal policy changes.

“Here across Connecticut. We have marches today, but just in Middletown we've got 1000s of people on the streets on Main Street and on our South green, really, really upset about what's happened in their country. Just this week, our economy is the intended for hails for the disastrous economic policies of this administration, but we've also seen horrible and fool cuts. to most vulnerable”.

The movement comes as public opinion remains divided. A recent national survey shows that 45% of Americans believe that President Trump’s direction marks positive change, while 48% see it as a change for the worse.

According to the White House, support for the administration’s “America First” trade and economic agenda is growing. Officials say a coalition of bipartisan leaders, labor organizations, and business groups back the plan.

Protests took place in cities large and small, including on the National Mall and right here in Connecticut.
