Samba, meneíto, and sizzling flavors filled the air Friday night as Hartford’s Parkville Market transformed into a vibrant celebration of Brazilian Independence Day.

Marking 203 years since Brazil declared independence from Portugal, the local Brazilian community turned out in full force, honoring their heritage with music, dance, and traditional food.

According to a 2023 analysis by the Migration Policy Institute, more than 30,000 Brazilians live in Connecticut, a number that reflects a growing and dynamic immigrant population in the state.

Brazilian singer José Paulo and his band headlined the event, energizing the crowd with the sounds of axé, a music genre that blends Afro-Brazilian rhythms with the bold beats of samba and frevo.

And no Brazilian celebration would be complete without its signature dishes. The aroma of picanha, a tender, flavorful cut of beef, filled the market, accompanied by grilled pineapple slices dusted with cinnamon and sugar. The sweet and savory combo delighted attendees.

While the night was full of joy, it also carried a somber undertone. Some participants reflected on the political tensions back home, where former President Jair Bolsonaro faces multiple charges, including allegedly attempting a coup following his 2022 election loss.

Still, the atmosphere remained festive. Green and yellow decorations, wide smiles, and a strong sense of community lit up the evening.

For many, the event was more than a celebration of independence; it was a reminder that wherever there is music, food, and unity, there is always reason to celebrate.
